Upper House election for northern region to resumes in Mogadishu
Federal electoral body has announced that the election of Upper House Senators for Somaliland community will resume today in the Somali capital of Mogadishu.
A total of three members of the Upper House chamber for Somaliland region will be elected in Mogadishu.
Somalia’s Federal Indirect Election Implementation Team (FIEIT) said the elections of Upper House for Somaliland will re-start following long discussion.
“After lengthy talks, we are pleased to announce the Upper House elections for Somaliland community will resume,” said FIEIT on Sunday.
There has been a standoff threatening to the election of Somaliland’s Upper House representatives in Mogadishu as the elders and politicians hailing Somaliland are in deadlock over the decision-making process.
“These three seats of the Upper House elections for Somaliland community will be contested by ten candidates,” said the electoral body on its twitter.
Somaliland is the only region yet to completed the Upper House electoral process. Jubbaland, HirShabelle, South West State, Galmudug Benadir and Puntland have filled seats allocated to them in the Upper House.
Somaliland which is only region whose elections of Upper and Lower House seats are taking in Somalia’s capital city, Mogadishu, was allocated 46 seats in the House of the People and 11 seats in the Upper House.
