US expresses concern over delay in the 2016 Somali electoral process
The US government has expressed concern over the delay in the 2016 Somali electoral process even two days after the UN Security Council raised similar concerns calling on the Somali government to expedite the process.
In statement issued on May 20, 2016, US Department of State said the continuing legitimacy of Somali federal institutions depends on Somalia’s leaders following through with a transparent political transition prior to the expiration of the current government’s mandate.
“We call on the federal parliament to act swiftly to enact and implement the National Leaders Forum-endorsed electoral model” said Mark C. Toner, Deputy Department Spokesperson in the statement.
The press statement noted that the United States stands ready to assist the Somali people and government in this step on their path towards stable democratic governance.
Remark of US department of State come as federal parliament is expected today to debate on the reviewed proposed electoral plan.
A UN Security Council delegation visited Somalia on Thursday to insist August elections proceed as planned, warning that political wrangling could derail a process intended to signal the country’s growing stability.
In a statement, Security Council President Abdellatif Aboulatta said the Council was clear on its position regarding the 2016 polls urging the president to ensure the electoral modalities are approved in time by Parliament.
“Our message was loud and clear. The Somali government has to move on with the elections on the date as decided. We urge the president to take any steps and use any constitutional tools to ensure the elections materialise,” said Aboulatta.
Parliament is Saturday expected to vote on the proposals to pave way for the 2016 elections.
