US Government Has no Plans to Recognize Independence of Any Region of Somalia, Ambassador Abdi Says

GOOBJOOG NEWS | WASHINGTON: Somalia’s Ambassador to the United States Dahir Hassan Abdi has rubbished reports that the United States government was considering recognizing Somaliland as an independent state.

Ambassador Abdi in a statement said the United States of America is keen on deepening ties with Somalia and that there are no plans for the Trump administration to recognize any region of Somalia as an independent entity.

The Ambassador added that Somalia respects the recent move by the Trump administration to close the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) which has provided humanitarian assistance in over 100 countries.

He however called on the United States Government to channel any aid intended for Somalia to the Somali government instead of sending it through intermediaries.

The ambassador also said that Somalia was working closely with the United States government to address the plight of Somali people residing in the US without proper documentation to ensure that its citizens are treated with dignity.

The remarks by the Somali envoy highlight ongoing diplomatic efforts to maintain strong bilateral relations amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
