US President Barrack Obama’s first cousin, Rukia Mboya, who died in Nairobi on Tuesday was buried in Kisumu on Thursday night.

Rukia was buried at around 8pm at Sunni Muslim Cemetery.

Her brother Pascal Hussein said the ceremony had to adhere Islamic doctrines despite delays.

“There was a delay in the programme which resulted in the late burial,” said Sheikh Musa, who presided over the ceremony.

Rukia was the daughter of Obama’s aunt Zeituni Onyango, who died in the US and was buried in Kisumu on May 6, 2014.

Hussein said she succumbed to acute Leukemia at Nairobi West Hospital after about one and a half years of illness.

“My sister died at the facility where she had been admitted for a while. She leaves behind a 21-year-old daughter, Hadijah Benaziz,” he said.

Hussein said the two had been living together in Nairobi.

Rukia’s mother Zeituni Onyango, 61, was buried at the cemetery in a hurried ceremony amid tight security on May 6, 2014.

She was buried a month after her death in Boston, Massachusetts in the USA, on April 8, 2014.

She is now survived by Hussein and two other sons, Feisal and Shabbir Abdi.
