US Stresses Political Unity in Somalia’s Fight Against Terrorism
GOOBJOOG NEWS|NEW YORK: The United States has emphasized that political unity in Somalia is vital to sustaining the fight against terrorism and building stronger security partnerships with Washington.
U.S. Senior Advisor for Africa Massad Boulos said this during a meeting with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to reaffirm American support.
Boulos noted that counterterrorism cooperation and governance reforms remain central to U.S.-Somalia relations, particularly as Mogadishu seeks greater international backing.
“We discussed the importance of political unity for fighting terrorism and strengthening security partnerships that protect both Somali and American interests,” Boulos said following the meeting.
Somalia has battled the Al-Shabaab insurgency for more than a decade, with U.S. assistance ranging from military training and joint operations to support for governance and institution-building. Political rifts have often slowed progress, making unity among Somali leaders a key priority for consolidating security gains.
