Victims of Galkayo attacks are in serious condition, medics

Some of the people injured in twin bombings that hit local government offices in Galkaayo town are said to be in a serious condition.

Abdirisaaq Mohamed said the conditions of some of the 52 people undergoing treatment to injuries sustained in Galkayo attack are “serious” and “complicated,”

“The injuries are serious and are normally not seen to such an extent. The multiple fractures are making their treatment difficult,” said Mohamed.

On Sunday at least 23 people were killed and over 80 others were injured in the attack that targeted a government building near a crowded market.

Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack, whose victims included schoolchildren.

In March, Al-Shabaab attacked a hotel in Galkayo, killing at least six people, including a senior local government official.

The African Union (AU) has some 22,000 troops battling al-Shabab in southern Somalia, where it was formed nearly a decade ago to fight and depose the western backed Somali government.
