WFP Warns of ‘Deaths’ as U.S. Cuts Funding Amid Worsening Food Crisis in Somalia

GOOBJOOG NEWS|GENEVA: The World Food Programme has warned of devastating humanitarian consequences as the Trump administration moves to cut funding for the worst-affected countries, including Somalia, which is on the brink of a worsening food crisis.
The WFP said the decision to cut funding ‘could amount to a death sentence for millions of people facing extreme hunger and starvation.” It added that if the cuts are implemented, it could amount to a death sentence for millions of people facing extreme hunger and starvation.
The warning follows reports that the Trump administration was winding down some of the last remaining U.S. funding for key programs in Somalia, Afghanistan, and Zimbabwe.
The funding had been spared during the halting of USAID operations globally early this year. This funding covers the provision of food, water, medical care and shelter for people displaced by war.
The move by the White House comes barely a month since the WFP warned of a worsening food crisis in Somalia.
WFP’s Director of Food Security and Nutrition Analysis, Jean-Martin Bauer said last month the number of people already experiencing crisis-levels of hunger or worse was expected to rise from 3.3 to 4.4 million between April and June 2025, when below-average rains are forecast, potentially creating drought conditions. This translates to almost one in every four people.
