A police officer opened fire at an auto-rickshaw killing the driver and his passenger in Howlwadag district in Mogadishu this morning barely two weeks after a similar incident in Waberi district.
The circumstances under which the incident happened remained unclear but residents have accused the police of targeted killings on auto-rickshaw (popularly known as bajaj) drivers in the city.
Demonstrations broke out following the killing with residents burning tires and barricading roads.
On April 1, a policeman gunned down an auto-rickshaw driver in Waberi district prompting calls by city mayor Abdirahman Yarisow for the arrest and prosecution of the officer. It is not clear yet if he was arrested.
