GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Hundreds of residents, most of them young people, gathered on Thursday evening at Mogadishu’s busy Taleex Junction to show support for a grassroots campaign aimed at improving cleanliness and public spaces in the Somali capital.

The spontaneous rally drew chants promoting civic responsibility and environmental care, as participants called on residents to take greater ownership of the city’s appearance. Organisers said the demonstration was meant to underline the role of citizens, particularly the youth, in restoring Mogadishu’s image.

The initiative, known as the “Cleanliness and Beauty of the Capital” movement, has gained momentum in recent weeks, driven largely by prominent Somali social media influencers who have mobilised followers to take part in clean-up activities across the Benadir region.

Rooted in the idea of Isxilqaan, or self-reliance, the campaign encourages volunteerism and community-led action rather than reliance solely on public authorities. Supporters say it has helped reframe waste management and urban beautification as a shared civic duty.

The gathering at Taleex Junction reflected a broader shift among young Somalis, many of whom say they want to play a direct role in shaping the country’s future. As the crowd dispersed, participants said the message was simple: Mogadishu’s residents are responsible for protecting and improving their city.
