GOOBJOOG NEWS/El-Wak: The swearing in of 16 newly elected MPs in El-Wak was carried out on Monday at the Afsiyoni tent in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, presided over by the Interim Speaker of the House of the People Amb. Abdisalan Ahmed Dhabanad.

The swearing in ceremony went on amid claims by the Chairman of the Lower House Committee on election of speaker Abdisalan Dhabana’ad that at some point , the Police Commissioner Gen. Ahmed Hijar stopped the swearing in process, forcing the exercise to be moved to a hotel inside the airport compound.

Rounds of bullets were subsequently fired at the hotel where the swearing in took place. Sources claimed officers from the intelligence agency, NISA, were behind the gun attack. The 16 MPs were however successfully sworn in.

Elections in the Gedo region have been marred with controversy over the legitimacy of the process as a team composed of the Federal polls body and Dispute Resolution Committee conducted parallel polls in Garbaharey.

The outgoing President and the Chairman of the Dispute Resolution Committee Mohamed Awil Warsame have termed the parallel elections in Elwak and Garbaharey in the Gedo region illegal, saying that both elections contravened the September 17th agreement set by the National Consultative Assembly.
