Another phase of training of new Jubbaland police recruits has started in earnest in the port city of Kismaayo. The police component of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) will train 203 recruits in this second phase.

The three months training will be conducted by AMISOM police trainers from July to October 2016.

Speaking during the launch of the second phase of training, the commander of the Jubbaland training center, Colonel Hassan Gabose Affey confirmed the new recruits’ readiness for the training.

“We would like to thank AMISOM for their sacrifice of training our police officers here using experts from different parts of our African continent. They have left their families so as to train and play greater role in peace restoration of our country, Somalia,” Colonel Affey said.

Speaking on behalf of AMISOM police, deputy Superintendent of Police Mr. Alexander Kweku Obeng said the basic policing course will focus on human rights observance and community policing, among other aspects.

‘’The training program for these recruits is designed for three months from July to October. It is very intensive because we are looking at both, practical and theoretical aspects that will affect their side of the community’s effective and communicative domain of the recruits, so that eventually we are going to have recruits who are trained to be responsive to human rights and to save and to protect not only life but also property of all Somalis including Jubbalanders. This is to ensure that the liberated areas are secured for the general public to go about their routine activities,’’ Superintendent Obeng added.

‘’African Union in co-operation with AMISOM have given us some preliminary start-up material. The materials have been coming in batches. The first batch of the materials that we have been given was towels. And as I speak to you, the second batches we have received include items like shampoo, washing materials and bed sheets. We are extremely grateful for these things,’’ said Abdirahman Abdullahi Hilow a police recruit.

This second phase of training is sponsored by the Department of International Development (DFID),through United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

30-percent of the trainees comprise of female recruits, an improvement from the last recruitment exercise.
