Cabinet sets up national agency to effectively handle drought

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: In response to the drought that has continued to ravage several parts of the county, a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre last night set up a National Disaster Management Agency.
The cabinet formed a committee consisting of ministers and members drawn from the business community, religious leaders and the civil society.
The formation of the agency came after it was seen that there was a need to include the Ministry of humanitarian affairs and Disaster Management in the newly set up cabinet, following confusion that arose when the ship carrying UAE aid docked at Mogadishu airport at the course of this week.
The National Disaster Mangement Committee chaired by the Somali Premier consists of:
- Deputy Prime Minister
- Minister of Interior, Federal and Reconciliation
- Minister of Religion and Endowments
- Minister of Health and Social Welfare
- Minister of Planning, Investment and Economic Development
- Minister of Finance
- Minister of Environment and Climate Change
- Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism
- Minister of Women and Human Rights
- Minister of Internal Security
- Defense Minister
- Minister of Energy and Water
- Special Envoy for Drought Emergency
- Somali scholars
- Chamber of Commerce and Industry
- Civil society organizations
