Elder in Southern Somalia appeals for Drought Assistance After Failed Rains,
A traditional elder in Southern Somalia has called for an international aid as parts of Gedo region raved a drought that has left hundred thousands of the population in dire need.
Elder Daqare Abdi Olaad said at least 500 families (10,000 people) in villages in Gedo region under Jubbaland State needed immediate assistance.
’The situation is very severe. The conditions are very harsh. We request for the Somali governent community to assist the many people in need,’’ he said.
Olaad said people and livestock started dying after severe water shortage hit the areas.
“I have seen with my own eyes goats and sheep and cattle dying; what livestock is left is so weak they cannot travel anywhere for water,” Olaad said. “They cannot be sold and they are useless for milk or meat.”
Pastoralist families are facing a serious shortage of water and pastures after several water points dried up the last few months as a result of dry spell that has hit in the region.
Thousands of Somalis have fled the countryside in search of food and water, trekking for days under scorching sun toward camps in major towns.
