Galmudug Re-Run Campaigns End Ahead of September 30 Vote

GOOBJOOG NEWS | GAALKAYO: Campaigning for Galmudug’s repeat elections has ended in Gaalkayo, with political groups and candidates concluding rallies and meetings ahead of the vote scheduled for September 30.

Galmudug leadership candidate Liibaan Ahmed Hasan formally closed his campaign in Gaalkayo, thanking residents, traditional elders, community leaders and federal and Galmudug officials for what he described as a warm reception during his campaign.

Speaking in Gaalkayo, Liibaan said the city could play a greater role in efforts to promote reconciliation and social cohesion in Galmudug. He also said he wanted to strengthen cooperation between Galmudug and neighbouring Puntland, particularly on issues affecting communities in the Mudug region.

His campaign had taken him to several parts of Galmudug in recent days. On September 19, a delegation led by Liibaan visited Guriceel, where it held political meetings and campaign activities.

Campaign activity has also been reported in Dhuusamareeb, Guriceel and other areas of Galgaduud and Mudug as political organisations seek support ahead of the repeat vote.

The election follows a ruling by Somalia’s Supreme Court that annulled the results of the July 30 election, saying the process had not complied with the Constitution and electoral law. The court ordered that the election be held again.

The electoral commission has set September 30, 2026 for the repeat elections for the Galmudug House of Representatives and local councils, with campaigning scheduled to end on September 28.

A total of 12 political organisations are taking part after submitting candidate lists and other required documents to the electoral commission, according to the commission.

The repeat election is part of Galmudug’s ongoing electoral process and comes amid efforts to resolve the legal and procedural issues that led to the cancellation of the July vote.
