Hunger death toll soars as 3 more people succumb to hunger in Dinsoor

GOOBJOOG NEWS/BAIDOA: Three people have been confirmed dead after succumbing to hunger in Dinsoor town of Somalia’s Southwest State, local officials reported. 

The three deaths adds to the growing list of Somalis who have lost their lives to the raging drought which is threatening to cause more damage if necessary interventions are not put in place.

The South West State is currently facing uncertain times as drought continues to unleash untold suffering, with famine similar to that of 2011 inevitable if aid is not urgently delivered to the affected communities. 

Just recently, the United Nations warned that the drought emergency in Somalia “is expected to get worse ahead of the next rainy season in April”, adding that “At least 4.5 million people have been affected by extreme drought in Somalia. Of these people, almost 671,000 have been displaced.”

The UN further warned of crippling lack of funds to tackle Somalia’s devastating drought which, it says, has been overshadowed by other crises in the world, including the Russia-Ukraine war.

Election delays in the country have not made things any better, as states such as Hirshabelle, are still embroiled in election disputes even as the March 15 deadline looms.
