Joint commission visits Bardale plane crash, southwest state

Somali Minister of Transport Mohamed Omar accompanied by Southwest regional Minister of Transport with Ethiopian and Kenyan Ambassadors visits the plane crash site in Bardale district.

The Embraer 120 African Express aircraft crashed in flames just before it was due to land in Bardale on 4th May 2020.

Somali Foreign Minister confirms that the Somali President, Mohamed Farmaajo spoke with his Kenyan counterpart as the heads of states discussed various issues including the plane crash. President Farmajo pledged to investigate the cause of the accident that killed six people.

Kenya’s foreign affairs ministry says its investigators have been invited to join the Somali inquiry.

Al-Shabab militant group stronghold presence in the area of Bardale, but the town and its aircraft field operates by Somali government soldiers and Ethiopian troops who are part of the African Union force in the country.

Ethiopia’s defence spokesperson has denied its forces had any involvement in the incident in Bardale, which is about 300km (180 miles) north-west of the capital, Mogadishu.
