GOOBJOOG NEWS | CAIRO: Somalia’s ambassador to Egypt and permanent representative to the Arab League, Ali Abdi Aware, has met the leader of the Northeastern State, Abdiqadir Ahmed Aw-Ali Firdhiye, during his visit to Egypt, as Mogadishu and Cairo continue to strengthen political and diplomatic ties.

The meeting focused on Somalia’s engagement with the Arab League and the growing relationship between Somalia and Egypt, which the Somali embassy described as having developed into a strategic partnership.

Aware briefed Firdhiye on the embassy’s diplomatic activities with the Arab League and efforts to advance bilateral cooperation between Somalia and Egypt.

Firdhiye, in turn, commended the ambassador and embassy staff for what he described as their commitment to implementing Somalia’s foreign policy, with the country’s unity and sovereignty remaining a central priority.

Somalia is seeking to deepen diplomatic and security partnerships with regional and international allies while navigating sensitive questions around federalism, political authority and national sovereignty.

Egypt has emerged as an increasingly important partner for Somalia, particularly on political and security issues. Cairo has repeatedly expressed support for Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, while Mogadishu has sought stronger cooperation with Egypt amid wider security and geopolitical shifts in the Horn of Africa.

The relationship also carries broader regional significance given Somalia’s strategic position along the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden and Egypt’s longstanding interest in stability in the Horn of Africa and the wider Nile and Red Sea regions.

Engagement through the Arab League provides Somalia an additional diplomatic platform for advancing its position on sovereignty and territorial integrity, while closer ties with Egypt could expand cooperation in areas including security, trade, education and institutional development.

The meeting between Aware and Firdhiye also highlights the importance of maintaining coordination between Somalia’s federal institutions and regional administrations as Mogadishu seeks to present a unified foreign-policy position abroad.
