OCTOBER REPORT: Renegade Abdikalil defies sack order, Kenyan teacher rescued in daring mission
Goobjoog News Monthly report takes a look at the stories that hit the headlines on a monthly basis in each of the regional states of Somalia. In October, former Gedo governor Mohamed Abdikalil defied sack orders from Jubbaland president Ahmed Mohamed Madobe and went ahead to appoint a district commissioner for Garbahary. A Kenyan teacher kidnapped in the border town of Garissa is rescued in a joint operation by Kenya Defence Forces and Somali National Army troops.
October 4, 2015: At least two people were killed and 10 others wounded after a brawl between armed militia
October 5, 2015: Jubbland state assembly meets to discuss its Parliamentary procedure manual for the first time. Deputy speaker Aden Khalif presided the session.
October 14, 2015: AMISOM Deputy Force Commander General Mohammedesha Zeyinu completes visit to Bardheere and Diinsor.
October 16, 2015: A Kenya teacher who had been kidnapped by suspected Al-Shabaab militants is rescued in a daring joint operation between the Somali National Army and the Kenya Defence Forces in Shaba-Difu, 15 kilometres inside Somalia. One of the abductors was killed during the operation while four others escaped according to military source.
October 18, 2015: Somali National Army and Al-shabaab engages in fierce clashes at Masalla-aduun of Gedo region. Gedo region governor Ahmed Bule Ahmad (Anjeh) briefs local media outlets. Somali National Army attacks Alshabab fighters after they received reports that Alshabab fighters forcefully seized livestock from owners in the area.
October 20, 2015: Torrential rains kill at least 4 people including two children, sweeps away hundreds of huts and displaces hundreds of families from their houses in parts of Gedo and Middle Jubba regions. Some of the villages including Liberto and Jiwaaray localities in Gedo and middle Jubba region respectively are submerged.
October 25, 2015: Kenya’s military says it has destroyed a base in Somalia operated by the Islamic extremist rebels of al-Shabab and killed 15 of its fighters.
Kenyan military spokesperson Col David Obonyo said in a statement that Kenyan troops under the African Union mission in Somalia destroyed an al-Shabab base at Yantooy by Jubba River in southern Somalia in a dawn attack.
October 28, 2015: Journalist under Jubbaland Authority express concern after they were denied access of state ministers for conducting news reports and features. The unexplained decision by State Authority was confirmed to Goobjoog News by senior official of the state who asked not to be named.
October 30, 2015: Former governor of Gedo region whom Jubbaland president fired names a new commissioner to Garbahary locality in a defiant move to challenge Jubbaland president Ahmed Madobe. Mohamed Abdikalil, a heavily armed tribal-man refused to step down after Jubba president issued a decree that called for his replacement.
October 31, 2015: Jubbland assembly gives extra 60 days to the state president to form a cabinet after the president failed to meet the previous deadline.
