GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The United Nations humanitarian organization has announced that 1,002,796 people have been displaced due to the drought in Somalia since January 2021, surpassing the one million mark.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said some 83,518 people were displaced in July by drought, a 26 percent decrease compared to the previous month.

On June 24, the UN agency made an appeal for 993.3 million dollars to give life-saving and life-sustaining aid to Somalia by December in order to stop famine and address the drought.

According to the OCHA, the effects of the drought and mounting economic pressures are escalating the severity of needs and pushing the nation dangerously close to famine.
