Parliament Advances Central Bank Amendments, Turkey Airport Deal

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s House of the People has advanced proposed amendments to the country’s Central Bank Law and an international airport cooperation agreement with Turkey to the next stage of parliamentary consideration, with the relevant committees tasked with preparing reports ahead of a third reading.

Lawmakers discussed the two items on Saturday during the 22nd sitting of the eighth session of parliament, chaired by Speaker Abdikadir Mohamed Nur, also known as Jama. The session opened with a quorum of 141 lawmakers, according to a statement from the House.

The proposed amendments to Central Bank Law No. 130, enacted on April 22, 2012, were prepared by the Ministry of Finance. Lawmakers continued their second-reading debate, examining provisions of the bill and discussing its significance for the country.

The House also conducted the second reading of an agreement between Somalia and Türkiye concerning cooperation on international airports. Lawmakers discussed the agreement’s importance to Somalia, although the parliamentary statement did not provide details of its specific provisions or the areas of airport operations it would cover.

At the close of the sitting, the speaker said both items had completed the second-reading stage. He directed the relevant committees to prepare reports for the third reading and return them to the House for further consideration.

The next stage will allow lawmakers to resume consideration of the proposals before the House fulfils the remaining steps in the legislative process. The parliamentary statement did not indicate when the committees would submit their reports or when the items would return for a third reading.
