Parliament to Debate About Kenyan Border Wall with Somalia
Somalia Federal Parliament is scheduled today to debate a motion by some MPs that propose a resolution that calls the Kenya border wall as illegal and against AU charter.
Kenya has made plans to construct a wall at the Kenya-Somali border in an attempt to stop cross border raids by Alshabab fighters.
Attempts by Kenyan authorities to materialize the construction of the wall are met with demonstrations by Somalia residents in the border town of Balad Hawo where the wall ought to be started.
Somalia MPs says that there is no way Kenya can build a wall on a border that is not clearly demarcated and not recognized by Somalia.
If built, it would be first of its kind in Africa, and this comes against the backdrop of efforts by African Union to integrate the continent and lift the burden of movement of people and trade commodities.
Ethnic Somali communities on the other side of the border in Kenya has also complained that the wall would have a devastating impact on their livelihood as it prevents their livestock from crossing to Somalia during the dry season.
