Heavy downpour and floods witnessed in and around Mogadishu have led to deaths and displacement of many of people in the city. At least six people were killed Saturday following heavy rains in the city which also led to cancellation of exams slated for Sunday.
“I am saddened by the incident. The government will help them get back to their normal lives alongside others in the country hit hard by floods,” he said.
The PM was accompanied by Security Minister, Mohamed Abukar Islow, Mogadishu Mayor, Abdirahman Omar Osman and several other officials.
Hundreds of families majority of them being IDPs in different parts of the town were displaced after their homes were inundated by flash floods following the heavy rains.
Speaking to the media, Maryam Hussein Ali, a flood victim said many families in Buluhubay suburb were rendered homeless after their houses were swept away by raging waters.
“Our belongings and foodstuff were washed away by floods. Our houses have been inundated and we are going spend the night in cold because we have nowhere to go,” said Ali.
She urged the government and donor agencies to move with speed in providing food and non-food items saying the worst affected by the floods are children, elderly and women.
