President Mohamud Addresses Non-Aligned Movement Summit in Serbia
GOOBJOOG NEWS | BELGRADE, Serbia: Federal Republic of Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has called for greater international cooperation to confront conflict, terrorism, geopolitical tensions and climate change as he addressed a summit marking the 65th anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement in Serbia.
President Mohamud, who travelled to Belgrade to attend the meeting, said the challenges facing the world could not be addressed by individual countries acting alone and required stronger international cooperation and collective action.
The president also outlined his government’s efforts to improve security, rebuild state institutions and advance development, while thanking international partners for their continued support.
He reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to the principles of the Non-Aligned Movement, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, equality, justice and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
The summit is being held under the theme “The Legacy of Non-Alignment: Lessons for Today’s World” and brings together leaders and representatives from member states to reflect on the movement’s role in a rapidly changing global political environment.
The meeting is expected to reaffirm the movement’s traditional principles of sovereign equality, respect for territorial integrity, non-interference in internal affairs and greater economic cooperation among developing countries.
The gathering offers Somalia an international platform to engage leaders from the Global South as it seeks to expand diplomatic ties and strengthen international support for the country’s security and development priorities.
The president’s emphasis on sovereignty and territorial integrity also comes as Somalia continues to push back against international moves it says could undermine its unity.
Somalia, which joined the Non-Aligned Movement in 1961, has in recent years sought to strengthen its diplomatic role after decades of conflict and state collapse, while pursuing closer engagement with regional and international partners.
The Belgrade meeting also provides the Somali government with an opportunity to present its reform agenda and seek broader support for its efforts to strengthen security, stabilise the country and promote economic development.
