President Mohamud Hails Security Gains and Growing Unity in Gaalkacyo
GOOBJOOG NEWS | GAALKACYO: Federal Government of Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has praised an improvement in security and growing cooperation in Gaalkacyo, describing the central Somali city as increasingly overcoming the divisions that have long separated its communities.
Speaking during a visit to Gaalkacyo president Mahmoud, said the city was now experiencing greater stability and visible development, crediting residents and local authorities for their efforts to improve security and public services.
The president recalled visiting Gaalkacyo about 20 years ago, when he said residents faced severe difficulties, including limited access to clean water. He said the changes he had witnessed on his return showed how far the city had come.
“Gaalkacyo is one city,” the president said, stressing the importance of maintaining the progress towards greater unity and cooperation.
Gaalkacyo has historically been divided administratively between Puntland and Galmudug, with the city serving as an important commercial and transport centre in central Somalia. Political tensions and periodic insecurity have at times reinforced the perception of the city as two separate areas despite its shared communities and economic links.
President Mahmoud said those divisions had gradually begun to ease, allowing residents to interact more closely and creating conditions for the city to regain a greater sense of unity.
He praised the people and local administrations for helping improve security and called for further cooperation to consolidate the gains.
The president’s remarks came during his wider tour of Galmudug, where he has been visiting towns, meeting communities and assessing security and development conditions.
The tour has also included stops in Dhuusamareeb, Xananbuure, Cadaado and Galinsoor, as well as a visit to military training facilities where newly trained Somali National Army units graduated.
The federal government has increasingly linked improved security in central Somalia with the expansion of government services and infrastructure, arguing that greater stability is necessary to support economic activity and strengthen state institutions.
For Gaalkacyo, president mohamud’s emphasis on unity comes as authorities seek to build on improved security and strengthen cooperation across the city’s administrative divide.
The president urged residents to protect the peace and work together to ensure that Gaalkacyo can take advantage of emerging development opportunities while preserving the security gains made in recent years.
