GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Federal government of Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud commissioned a Turkish drilling vessel at the Port of Mogadishu Friday, marking the start of the country’s first offshore oil exploration campaign.

The Çağrı Bey Drillship will lead deep-sea exploration efforts as Somalia seeks to tap into its potential hydrocarbon reserves and expand its role in the global energy sector.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mohamud said the project could support economic growth, attract investment and create jobs, while stressing that resource management must be transparent and benefit Somali citizens.

He said revenues from the sector would be directed toward public services, infrastructure development and broader state-building efforts.

The president also thanked Turkey for its continued support, highlighting close cooperation between the two countries in areas including security, infrastructure and economic development.

The launch ceremony was attended by senior Somali officials, regional leaders and international partners, reflecting the significance of the initiative.

The development comes as Somalia steps up efforts to attract foreign investment and diversify its economy after decades of conflict, while strengthening legal and institutional frameworks to manage natural resources.

Offshore exploration could offer significant economic potential if viable reserves are confirmed, though its success will depend on security, regulatory clarity and sustained international partnerships.
