President Mohamud Says Galmudug’s Progress Shows Somalia Is Emerging From Decades of Crisis
GOOBJOOG NEWS | DHUSAMAREB: Federal government of Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has said the changes seen in Galmudug in recent years reflect a broader recovery in Somalia, pointing to improvements in governance, security and the rebuilding of state institutions.
Speaking in Dhusamareb at an event marking the anniversary of the establishment of the Galmudug administration, President Mohamud praised residents for what he described as their contribution to rebuilding their communities after years of weak governance and insecurity.
The president said Galmudug today was markedly different from the region he had encountered during earlier visits, when state institutions were weaker and insecurity posed major obstacles to governance.
He credited both government efforts and local communities for the progress, saying Somalia was gradually moving away from decades of instability and rebuilding institutions capable of providing services and security.
The president also highlighted progress against Al-Shabaab and Islamic State militants, which he identified as Somalia’s main security threats acknowledging that both groups remained active but said their capabilities had been significantly weakened compared with previous years.
Somali security forces, backed by local communities and international partners, have continued operations against the groups in several parts of the country.
President Mohamud said the government would maintain its campaign against armed groups and that recent security gains had made it possible to hold major public events in areas that had previously faced serious security restrictions.
He pointed to the ability of communities to organise public gatherings in different parts of the country as an indication of improved security and the expanding reach of state institutions.
CHANGING LANDSCAPE
Galmudug has been an important part of Somalia’s efforts to strengthen federal governance and security in the country’s central regions.
The administration has also been a major arena in the fight against Al-Shabaab, particularly in parts of Galgaduud and Mudug where government forces and local communities have conducted military operations.
The president said the progress achieved so far needed to be protected through continued cooperation between the federal government, Galmudug authorities and local communities.
He called for continued efforts to build a stable Somalia capable of taking greater responsibility for its own security and development.
During his visit, president mohamud met Galmudug officials and communities as the federal government seeks to expand state services and development programmes beyond major urban centres.
He said the government wanted to extend public services and development to more towns and communities across Galmudug.
The visit comes as Somalia seeks to consolidate security gains while strengthening federal institutions and increasing the state’s ability to provide basic services.
For Galmudug, the president’s message was that the region’s transformation is not complete but represents progress from the period of limited government presence and prolonged insecurity.
For Somalia more broadly, the government faces the challenge of turning those security and governance gains into lasting stability, stronger institutions and improved services for communities across the country.
