National Food Security and Nutrition Conference Opens in Mogadishu
GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The Office of the Prime Minister has launched a two-day national conference in Mogadishu focused on strengthening food security and nutrition across Somalia, bringing together government officials, development partners, technical experts, and representatives from Federal Member States.
The conference was officially opened by State Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister, Hirsi Gaani Jama, and has drawn participation from experts representing United Nations agencies, federal ministries, and regional administrations.
The forum has been convened by the Food Security, Nutrition and Climate Change Council (FSNCC), a multi-sectoral platform comprising key government institutions and Federal Member States tasked with monitoring Somalia’s food security situation and coordinating responses to emerging challenges.
Over the course of the two-day meeting, participants will review research findings, policy proposals, and technical assessments aimed at addressing food insecurity and malnutrition. Discussions are expected to inform government decisions and guide the implementation of targeted interventions to improve nutritional outcomes for vulnerable populations across the country.
The conference has also brought together representatives from UN agencies, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and World Food Programme (WFP), alongside humanitarian organization Concern Worldwide, private sector actors involved in the food trade, and Somalia’s disaster management authorities.
Officials said the outcomes of the conference will be closely monitored, with recommendations expected to be submitted to the country’s senior leadership to support evidence-based policymaking on food systems, nutrition, and climate resilience.
Addressing participants, Dr. Mohamed Abdi Farah, Lead Advisor for Food Systems, Nutrition and Climate at the Office of the Prime Minister, expressed optimism about the conference’s potential impact. He emphasized the need for innovative thinking and practical solutions to tackle the persistent challenges of food insecurity and malnutrition facing Somali communities.
The gathering comes as Somalia continues to confront the combined effects of climate shocks, recurring droughts, and economic pressures that have placed millions of people at risk of food insecurity, underscoring the need for coordinated national action and long-term solutions.
