Property valued at $35m destroyed by floods in Mogadishu-mayor

Property worth $35 million was destroyed in the past few days by floods in Mogadishu which also killed six people and displaced several families.

Mogadishu Mayor Abdirahman Yarisow revealed the impact of the floods Monday noting 301 buildings were also affected as major roads rendered impassable.

The governor said the flooding has also heralded a humanitarian crisis in the city calling on aid agencies and Somalis to step in provide emergency relief.

“Apart from the property loss, there is also a humanitarian crisis which requires urgent response,” the mayor said. He added his administration was doing its best to avert further surffering.

Among the dead, the mayor who also doubles as Banaadir region governor said were children under the age of 12. Shaqaalaha road in Hordan district and interconnections between Dabka and Bakarah market in addition to those in Warta Nabdad and General Daud were adversely affected, the mayor added.

“I call on aid agencies and in general to all who have access to emergency food and medical supplies to distribute to the affected populations,” the mayor said. As predicted by the forecast, additional rainfall is expected so that they should be prepared and the rescue will come as soon as possible
