Nine Al-Shabaab militants killed in joint offensive-Govt

Nine Al-Shabaab militants were killed Friday in the southwestern region of Bay in a joint offensive between Somali and international forces, the government said.

In a statement to newsrooms Saturday, the Ministry of Information said the militants, among them senior figures were neutralised in a joint operation Friday. The statement did not, however, reveal the identity of the senior militants.

The government also noted confirmed that there were no civilians harmed in the operation.

The operation on Friday follows U.S airstrikes that killed 44 Al-Shabaab militants in two days last week in the central Somali region of Mudug.

The U.S. forces have increased strikes against Al-Shabaab in southern and central Somalia with the strikes this year clocking over 30.
