GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The Somali government announced Wednesday evening the killing of almost 100 Khawarij fighters by the army, backed by international partners and local people.

The Ministry of Information said in a statement that the first operation killed 50 members of the terrorist group in the El Gorof area of the Galgadud region and destroyed bases set up by the militants for organizing their criminal activities.

A second operation was carried out in the Geshaan area of the Lower Shabelle region, where the army chanced on several members of the group who had gathered to plot against the Somali people in Basra, dealing them a severe blow that left 47 members of the group dead.

Authorities in Somalia have expressed gratitude to locals and foreign allies for helping to clear the area of terrorists who were preparing attacks against civilians.

The government on Wednesday also announced, through the State News Agency SONNA, the army’s takeover of Wabho, a key town in the region of Galgadud, which had been under Khawarij control for the last 15 years.
