Somalia, Arab League Seek Stronger Media and Cultural Cooperation
GOOBJOOG NEWS | CAIRO: Somalia and the Arab League have discussed strengthening the exchange of expertise and knowledge and enhancing the role of media in promoting and preserving Arab culture, as the two sides seek to deepen cooperation in information, culture and tourism.
The discussions took place during a meeting between Somalia’s Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Abdifitah Qasim Mahmoud, and Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy at the organisation’s headquarters in Cairo. Somalia’s ambassador to Egypt, Ali Abdi Aware, also attended.
The meeting explored ways to expand cooperation between Somalia and the regional organisation, particularly through professional knowledge-sharing, cultural exchange and closer collaboration in media development.
Somalia joined the Arab League on February 14, 1974, establishing a formal framework for its engagement with Arab countries on political, economic, social and cultural matters. It has also been a member of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organisation (ALECSO) since 1976.
The latest talks build on earlier engagement between Somalia’s Information Ministry and Arab League institutions. In September 2025, the ministry held discussions with an Arab League delegation on media development and initiatives to promote the Arabic language, including support for national media and the preservation of broadcasting archives.
The meeting forms part of the Somali government’s efforts to strengthen ties with regional and international organisations. Somalia’s embassy in Cairo said it would continue working to facilitate the implementation of issues discussed during the talks.
