Somalia, Egypt to Enhance Cooperation in Fight Against Terrorism
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The federal republic of Somalia and Egypt have signed an agreement that will see the two nations enhance cooperation in the Al-Shabaab.
According to a statement from the Somali Defense Ministry, Egypt has committed to support the Somali government in the fight against terrorism.
The discussion was held during final technical discussions on the African nations’ participation in a new African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia held in Mogadishu on Sunday.
“The Federal Government of Somalia is cognizant of the role Egypt can partake in eliminating the Al-Shabaab group and looks forward to Egypt’s contribution alongside other troop contributing partner nations,” the Defense Ministry said.
This comes a few days after President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud paid an official visit to Egypt on an invite by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi where the two leaders agreed to enhance strategic partnership in various areas.
Among the areas on focus are education, justice, politics, security, communications and economy.
The two leaders also agreed to accelerate cooperation between their countries’ institutions, especially the judicial and security authorities.
The collaboration by the two states underscores the strengthening ties between Somalia and Egypt in the fight against terrorism and in fostering regional stability.
