Somalia-Ethiopia Deal Crucial in Advancing Regional Peace, AUSSOM Head Says

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Special Representative to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia and Head of AUSSOM, Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef has expressed his support for the Joint Communiqué between Somalia and Ethiopia issued on January 11, 2025, in Addis Ababa.

In the Communiqué, issued following talks between Somalia’s president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, the countries reaffirmed their commitment to the Ankara Declaration.

The two sides also agreed to focus their efforts on strengthening diplomatic ties, enhancing security cooperation, and promoting economic integration.

Ambassador Souef said the move is crucial in advancing regional peace, stability, and shared prosperity and at the same time commended the leadership of both nations for their dedication to advancing peace and security in the Horn of Africa.

“This Joint Communiqué represents an important step in reinforcing the principles of the Ankara Declaration. The renewed focus on diplomacy, security collaboration, and economic partnership will significantly contribute to regional stability and the aspirations of a peaceful and prosperous Africa,” Ambassador Souef said in a statement.

He further reiterated AUSSOM’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s stabilization efforts and regional partnerships, in alignment with the aspirations of the Somali people and the African Union’s vision for a peaceful and prosperous Africa.
