GOOBJOOG NEWS | BEIJING: Somalia is working to modernise its media sector and adapt to rapid technological change, including the growing use of artificial intelligence, Information, Culture and Tourism Minister Abdifatah Qasim Mohamud has said.

Speaking at the 7th Africa-China Media Cooperation Forum in Beijing, Qasim outlined Somalia’s efforts to modernise its media industry and the challenges facing African countries as digital technologies reshape how news is produced, distributed and consumed.

The minister highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI), new media platforms and digital technologies, saying Somalia was seeking to develop a modern media sector capable of keeping pace with rapid technological changes while maintaining professional standards and responsibility.

He said media development should not be limited to adopting new technologies, but should also focus on providing accurate information, supporting public awareness and strengthening social cohesion.

Qasim also stressed the importance of closer media cooperation between Africa and China, particularly in technology, professional training, exchange of expertise and strengthening the institutional capacity of media organisations.

He said Somalia was ready to make greater use of opportunities created by the forum as the government works to strengthen national media institutions and develop the skills of media professionals.

Somalia’s participation in the Beijing forum comes as African media organisations face growing pressure to adapt to social media, digital news platforms and AI, while also dealing with challenges such as misinformation, changing audience behaviour and the need to maintain trust in news reporting.

The minister was accompanied at the forum by Somalia’s ambassador to China, Hodan Osman Abdi, and Radio Muqdisho Director Abdifatah Dahir Jayte.
