Somalia Joins African Parliaments in Push to Modernise Legislative Institutions

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MIDRAND: Somalia has joined parliamentary officials from across Africa in discussions on modernising legislative institutions and improving the implementation of African Union agreements and Agenda 2063 priorities.

Secretary-General of Somalia’s Upper House of Parliament, Abdinasir Ibrahim Guled, is attending the seventh annual meeting of the Association of Secretaries-General of African Parliaments, which opened at the Pan-African Parliament headquarters in Midrand, South Africa.

The two-day meeting is being held under the theme, “Strengthening Parliamentary Action for Effective Implementation of African Union Agreements and Agenda 2063 Priorities.”

Discussions are focusing on how parliamentary administrations can modernise their working systems and respond to changing institutional and leadership demands.

Pan-African Parliament President Dr Fateh Boutbig, who officially opened the meeting, said parliamentary administrations are central to the continuity and effectiveness of democratic institutions.

He also highlighted the importance of institutional links among parliamentary secretaries-general in strengthening cooperation between legislatures across Africa.

Somalia’s participation provides an opportunity for its Upper House to exchange experience with other African legislatures on parliamentary administration, institutional development and modernisation.

The meeting also comes as African parliaments seek to strengthen their role in translating continental commitments and policy priorities into effective legislative and institutional action.
