Somalia, Kuwait Expand Cooperation on Governance and Anti-Corruption

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia and Kuwait have agreed to deepen cooperation on preventing and combating corruption through greater exchange of expertise, training and institutional capacity-building, following talks between officials from the two countries.

The agreement emerged from a meeting between Somalia’s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Hassan Maalim Mahmoud and Rana Al-Fares, chairperson of Kuwait’s Anti-Corruption Authority, where the two sides discussed ways to strengthen the institutions responsible for promoting transparency and accountability.

Al-Fares proposed closer sharing of knowledge and practical experience between the two countries, particularly on anti-corruption procedures and approaches that could help strengthen Somalia’s institutional capacity.

The proposal was welcomed by Mahmoud, who emphasised the need for sustained cooperation and training to support Somalia’s efforts to improve mechanisms for preventing corruption and strengthening public accountability.

The two sides also discussed broader cooperation aimed at improving the effectiveness of government institutions, with the exchange of experience expected to provide opportunities for Somali officials to learn from Kuwait’s practices in combating corruption.

The engagement comes as Somalia continues efforts to strengthen governance institutions and improve transparency and accountability in the public sector, areas that require stronger institutional capacity and sustained international cooperation.
