Somalia, Qatar Ink Deal to Establish New Technology University
GOOBJOOG NEWS | DOHA: The Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education has signed a cooperation agreement with Qatar-based University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) to support the establishment of Somalia’s Technology University (TUS University).
The agreement, signed in Doha, will provide technical support for developing the university’s academic programmes, curricula, teacher training and quality assurance and certification systems.
The first phase will focus on technology, marine sciences, aviation, petroleum, engineering, energy and health management, fields the government says are important to building the skills of Somali young people and meeting labor market demands.
UDST will also help train Somali teachers who are expected to form part of the academic and administrative workforce of the new institution, according to the ministry.
The project is part of Somalia’s National Transformation Plan 2025–2029, which seeks to improve education quality and expand skills development in areas linked to economic growth and employment.
The agreement was signed for Somalia by Mohamed Abdullahi Mahmoud, Director General of Higher Education, while UDST Vice President for Education Prof. Rashid Benlamri signed for the university.
Somalia’s education minister, the country’s ambassador to Qatar and senior UDST officials attended the signing ceremony.
The ministry welcomed Qatar’s continued support for Somalia and said the partnership would contribute to strengthening the country’s higher education and technical skills capacity.
