GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia and Saudi Arabia have reaffirmed their longstanding ties and pledged to strengthen bilateral cooperation following a meeting between the Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People, Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur Jama, and Saudi Ambassador to Somalia Ahmed Mohammed Almowallad.

The meeting, held at the Speaker’s office in Mogadishu, focused on strengthening relations between the two countries and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest, according to Somalia’s parliament.

Almowallad congratulated Jama on his election as Speaker of the House of the People and wished him success in carrying out his parliamentary responsibilities.

Jama, in turn, thanked the Saudi government for what he described as its continued support for Somalia and its people.

The meeting highlighted the longstanding historical and fraternal relationship between Mogadishu and Riyadh, as both sides expressed an interest in further strengthening diplomatic and institutional ties.

Saudi Arabia has long maintained close political, economic and cultural links with Somalia, with the two countries sharing historical ties rooted in geography, trade and longstanding relations between their peoples.

Riyadh has also been an important partner for Somalia in regional and international forums, while Mogadishu has sought stronger engagement with Gulf countries as it works to expand diplomatic partnerships and support economic development.

The latest meeting comes as Somalia continues efforts to strengthen its state institutions and deepen relations with regional and international partners.

The involvement of the Somali parliament also points to the growing importance of parliamentary diplomacy in supporting broader government-to-government relations.

For Saudi Arabia, Somalia remains strategically important because of its location along the Gulf of Aden and the wider Red Sea corridor, one of the world’s key maritime trade routes.

Both sides are expected to continue building on their longstanding relationship through diplomatic, political and economic cooperation.
