Somaliland forces shell SSC positions in Laas’anod as fighting rages on
GOOBJOOG NEWS|LAAS’ANOD: Somaliland forces reportedly shelled a neighbourhood in the battle-hit town of Laas’anod Saturday morning in a continuing conflict despite local and international calls for an end to the fighting.
Sources in the town said the shelling hit areas occupied by the SSC forces destroying buildings in the area.
The Sool Sanaan and Cayn (SSC) faction comprising mainly of the Dhulbahante clan allied to Puntland is opposed to the Somaliland administration in the region.
Fighting has been going on since last December following the killing of a local politician. The UN Security Council early this month called on Somaliland to withdraw its forces from Laas’anod. On Thursday, the UN Security Council reiterated its call for an end to the fighting in the contested region.
