Truce in Abudwaq after elder’s intervention to end bloodshed

Clan-clashes in remote villages of Abudwaq district which left over ten people dead and wounded several subsided after traditional elders successfully brokered a ceasefire deal

The elders, led by Sultan Abdiasis Omar Daad enclave to try to broker a ceasefire deal which bored fruits.

“We have achieved a lasting cease fire and successfully arrested the violence,” Abdi-Aziz said.

The remote villages’ clans have over time gone into war over grazing and land disputes dated almost a decade ago.

The recent clashes have left dozens dead and score injured before the intervention of respect clan leaders.

Hundreds of families fled their homes in the area, where fighters loyal to two clans were battling it out.

Somalia has been without an effective national government since 1991 when the regime of Dictator Mohammed Siad Barre was toppled. Since then, it has been ripped apart by clan warfare. A transitional government was established in 2000 after lengthy inter-clan talks in Djibouti followed by two governments established in the country but have so far failed to exert their authority the whole and eradication clan clashes.
