US airstrike kills 8 Shabaab militants in Lower Shabelle

Eight Al-Shabaab militants were killed Monday in a US airstrike in Lower Shabelle region in southern Somalia.

The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) said a statement Tuesday the airstrike in the vicinity of Daru Salaam was ‘conducted in support of Somali-led ground forces that came under attack from militants’

“U.S. Africa Command currently assesses this airstrike killed 8 militants. At this time, it is assessed no civilians were injured or killed in this airstrike,” the statement read in part.

Monday’s strike adds to 25 the number of strikes by US forces on Al-Shabaab targets this year bringing the death toll to 244. In 2018, the US forces ratcheted up strikes killing 388 militants in 47 strikes up from 35 in the preceding year.
