US conduct airstrikes in Lower Shabelle and Bay region, Somalia
U.S. Africa Command has conducted two airstrikes in separate engagements in the last 48 hours.
The first airstrike occurred in the vicinity of Gandarshe, Lower Shabelle Region, Somalia, on February 3, 2019, and the second airstrike was conducted in the vicinity of Leego, Bay Region, Somalia, on February 5, 2019.
The US African Command has not figured any Al-Shabaab casualties in the two strikes.
The statement said no civilians were killed.
The strike, AFRICOM said was to stop Al-Shabaab taking advantage of safe havens from which they can build capacity and attack the people of Somalia.
“In particular, the group uses portions of southern and central Somalia to plot and direct terror attacks, steal humanitarian aid, extort the local populace to fund its operations, and shelter radical terrorists,” AFRICOM said.
