AFRICOM confirms August 14 airstrike that killed 13 Al-Shabaab militants in Hiiraan region

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The US military has confirmed that it carried out an airstrike in Somalia on August 14, that killed 13 Al-Shabaab militants in a remote location in Teedan locality, Hiiraan region.

A statement released by AFRICOM said it conducted the airstrike in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia against Al-Shabaab that were actively attacking Somali National Army Forces in the Hiiraan region.

This is the second strike against al-Shabaab fighters this week, as US Africa Command confirmed that they had killed four members of the terrorist group on August 9.

US military forces have been active in the region since President Biden’s ascension to power after former President Donald Trump had ordered the withdrawal of about 700 troops.

Additionally, this coincides with ongoing adjustments for the American military in the region.

Marine General Michael Langley took over from Gen. Stephen Townsend of the US Army, as the top U.S. commander for Africa, on Tuesday. 

He is the second African American to lead the command, which has about 6,000-7,000 troops across the continent
