Al-Shabaab militants attack military base in Middle Shabelle, Somalia

A heavy fight between the Somali federal government forces and Al-Shabaab forces broke out in Balad district of Middle Shabelle region.

Reports indicate that Al-Shabaab militants have last night attacked a government military base in the western part of Balad district, resulting in many casualties.

Officials say government troops have responded back to the Al-Shabab fighters killing several fighters, but the exact number of casualties has not been established.

The situation in Balad district is now calm and government forces have been deployed to nearby districts in the area.

Al-Shabaab has carried several attacks on AMISOM and government forces base in different locations in southern Somalia.

The group was pushed out of Mogadishu in 2011 by Somali troops backed by AMISOM soldiers.
