AMISOM to recruit 800 new police officers in HirShabelle state
The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), has announced plans for a new police recruitment drive in HirShabelle state.
A total of 800-police officers will be recruited in an exercise due to start this November.
“From 1st of November, we shall start the recruitment of the first batch of 200 police officers for Hirshabelle State,” Ms. Christine Alalo, the Acting AMISOM Police Commissioner said.
“Hopefully after the training, they will be deployed along the Main Supply Routes and other populated areas in the state,” she noted.
Ms. Alalo was speaking in Mogadishu yesterday, during a handover of a motor vehicle to the HirShabelle State Police.
“One of our objectives is to support the Somali Police Force with logistics, to be able to take over full responsibility and there is no way they can take over full responsibility unless they have the equipment,” Ms. Alalo stated..
The vehicle donated by AMISOM, was handed over to the HirShabelle Minister of Internal Security Mr. Abdi Adan Jelle and the Hirshabelle Police Commissioner Mr. Hassan Dhi’isow and senior Federal Government officials.
The vehicle will boost policing activities in the state as AMISOM transitions the security responsibility to the Somali security forces.
“The donation signifies the spirit of rebuilding and peace consolidation of Somalia, represented by the will of the international community to help the people of Somalia, to help the government both at federal and member states, to rise up and take charge of the responsibilities expected of any government in the world,” said Mr. Simon Mulongo, the deputy Head of AMISOM, who officiated the handover ceremony.
In his remarks, the HirShabelle Minister of Internal Security Mr. Abdi Adan Jelle, lauded AMISOM for the donation, which he said would help strengthen police operations in the state.
The Senior Advisor to the Federal Minister of Internal Security Mr. Ahmed Kooshin, acknowledged the enormous support AMISOM has continued to accord to the Federal Government and the Federal Member States.
“AMISOM has been working with us hand in hand, in terms of rebuilding our Somali security forces, in particular the police,” Kooshin noted, while also lauding the European Union for providing critical financing to key projects in Somalia.
