GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The African Union has reaffirmed its commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and stability following talks between President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the deputy chairperson of the African Union Commission, Selma Malika Haddadi.

Haddadi, speaking on behalf of African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, said the continental body would continue supporting Somali-led efforts to improve security, stabilise the country and strengthen state institutions.

She also praised the Somali government’s military campaign against the Islamist militant group al Shabaab, commending the leadership of President Mohamud and the progress made by Somali security forces in operations against the insurgents.

The meeting also focused on preparations for Somalia’s upcoming elections, with the African Union welcoming efforts to promote an inclusive political dialogue aimed at building consensus ahead of the vote.

Haddadi said discussions further addressed funding challenges facing the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), reaffirming the AU’s commitment to working with international partners to sustain the mission and support Somalia’s long-term security transition.

The African Union has remained one of Somalia’s principal security partners for nearly two decades, with AUSSOM succeeding the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) earlier this year as Somali authorities gradually assume greater responsibility for national security. The AU says continued political dialogue, sustained international support and progress in security sector reform remain critical to Somalia’s stability and state-building efforts.
