Somalia Probes Social Media Account Over False Claims Against Journalists
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia has launched an investigation into a social media account accused of spreading false allegations against Somali journalists and online personalities, warning that the posts could endanger their safety and undermine press freedom.
The Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism said in a statement that an account on X operating under the name “Counter Terrorism Policing KE” had published allegations accompanied by photographs of prominent Somali journalists and social media figures.
The ministry rejected the allegations as false and baseless, accusing those behind the posts of attempting to damage the individuals’ reputations, restrict their freedom of expression and expose them to potential security risks.
“The Ministry categorically rejects the allegations concerning the well-known journalists and social media figures whose photographs appeared in the posts,” the statement said.
The ministry said it was working with relevant authorities to identify those responsible for the account and determine whether legal action should be taken.
The controversy raises concerns about the potential dangers of online misinformation targeting media professionals in Somalia, where journalists have long faced security threats, intimidation and harassment linked to their work.
False accusations involving journalists can carry serious consequences in a country where media workers operate amid persistent security challenges, including threats from Al-Shabaab and other armed actors.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting journalists’ rights, dignity and safety while encouraging responsible use of social media platforms.
The ministry did not identify the journalists featured in the posts or provide details of the allegations under investigation.
