Somalia Approves Two New Agreements with Mauritania to Boost Bilateral Ties

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s Cabinet has approved two agreements with Mauritania covering political consultations and diplomatic training, as the two countries seek to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

The agreements were approved at the Cabinet’s weekly meeting in Mogadishu on Thursday, chaired by Acting Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama.

The government said the agreements are intended to expand cooperation between Somalia and Mauritania, particularly through regular political consultations and training programmes for diplomats.

The political consultations are expected to provide a framework for the two governments to exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest, while the diplomatic training agreement will support professional development for officials working in Somalia’s Foreign Service.

The agreements come as Somalia continues to deepen diplomatic engagement with African and Arab countries and strengthen cooperation with partners across the continent.

Somalia and Mauritania share membership in the African Union and the Arab League and have maintained diplomatic relations, with both countries also involved in wider regional discussions on security, development and political affairs.

The Cabinet meeting also reviewed the security situation in Somalia and ongoing efforts to combat the Al-Shabaab militant group.

The government has made the fight against Al-Shabaab a central priority, alongside efforts to strengthen Somalia’s security institutions and expand state authority.

No further details were immediately provided on the implementation timetable or specific activities to be undertaken under the two agreements.

The approval nevertheless provides a formal framework for expanding political and diplomatic cooperation between Mogadishu and Nouakchott, particularly in an environment where Somalia is seeking stronger regional partnerships and greater diplomatic capacity.
