China donates humanitarian aid for flood victims in Somalia
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Chinese embassy in Somalia has donated relief aid to assist Somali people affected by floods in various regions in Somalia.
Chinese Ambassador to Somalia Fei Shangchao Wednesday while handing over the relief aid to Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) Mahamud Moallim in Mogadishu said China empathizes with the Somali people who have been adversely affected by floods.
China is the first country to provide direct humanitarian assistance to Somalia since the severe floods hit the country.
“China has decided to provide 1 million Yuan (about 140000 USD) emergency assistance to Somalia in cash. In addition, more than 1000 tons of emergency food aid will arrive soon to support Somali disaster relief efforts,” he said.
The ambassador also stated that China is now calling upon the international community to join the humanitarian efforts to assist the Somali people to surmount the challenges that has been brought about by the floods.
On his part, commissioner Moallim thanked the Chinese government for its generous assistance and said that the humanitarian aid was very timely promising that the Federal Government will ensure the relief is properly managed to only target affected persons.
