EU Training Mission Marks 16 Years in Somalia, Ramps up Support for Local Forces
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The European Union Training Mission in Somalia marked its 16th anniversary this week, reaffirming its support for building capable and accountable Somali security forces as the country pushes to take full control of its defence.
Since its deployment in 2010, the mission has focused on training, mentoring and advising the Somali National Armed Forces, aligning its programmes with priorities set by the Federal Government of Somalia.
EUTM Somalia said its activities have expanded significantly over the past year, with a sharp increase in training courses and personnel, reflecting closer coordination with international partners and growing demand from Somali institutions.
The mission is currently implementing its ninth mandate, with an emphasis on developing local trainers, strengthening command structures and supporting compliance with the rule of law.
The anniversary comes at a pivotal time for Somalia’s security transition, as the country moves from the long-running African Union Mission in Somalia to the new African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia, aimed at gradually handing over security responsibilities to Somali forces.
It also coincides with intensified military operations against Al-Shabaab, with the federal government seeking to expand territorial control while strengthening institutions in newly recovered areas.
Analysts say sustained international training and advisory support will be critical as Somalia works to consolidate security gains, professionalise its forces and maintain stability amid ongoing political and security challenges.
